Ocean Nutrition Canada Limited (ONC), supplier of MEG-3® brand Omega-3 EPA/DHA food and dietary supplement ingredients, is just one of the many companies assisting Vitamin Angels in their quest to eliminate childhood blindness and malnutrition. And now, Ocean Nutrition has taken this initiative one step further.
During ONC's Christmas party, employees were told about Vitamin Angels and how they could help. The company said that in addition to previous donations made they would match any donations made by employees. A representative of ONC's major shareholder, in attendance at the party, also offered to contribute. Within a week of the Christmas Party $11,899 USD was raised and has been forwarded to Vitamin Angels in support of Operation 2020.
Operation 2020 is a major campaign for Vitamin Angels that focuses on childhood blindness. The goal is to eliminate this disease, by the year 2020, through systematic distribution of Vitamin A supplements to at risk children. Approximately $1 provides sufficient funding to keep a child from going blind.
Robert Orr, President & CEO at ONC, said, "It is unacceptable that there are people in the world who are lacking the basic nutrients needed to survive when there is something we can do to prevent it." Orr continued, "It takes only $1 to stop a child from going blind, just $1. Because of the efforts of ONC employees 11,899 children will be spared the ravages of childhood blindness."
Jane Lundin, an ONC employee, said, "My husband and I saw Roberts presentation on Operation 2020 at the company Christmas party and we both thought it was a worthwhile cause and that donating money was something we could do to make a difference. It is hard to believe that, in this day and age, people are still going blind because of lack of nutrition."
Howard Schiffer, at Vitamin Angels, said, "Every minute a child goes blind - yet 80% of all blindness is preventable. It takes so little per child to stop this disease." Schiffer continued, "We urge other companies to challenge their employees the way ONC did. If every company did this, we would be able to eradicate childhood blindness in the near future. Every bit helps, there is no donation too small."
